NAIOP-Maryland selects Living Classrooms Foundation for spring community service event

Brendan Gill’s eyes get large and his voice animated when he starts discussing the specific details surrounding NAIOP-Maryland’s plans to invest a half-day of resources and energy to benefit the Living Classrooms Foundation. And, come April 17, these same eyes will be behind a set of protective goggles as the Community Service Chairman leads an expected team of more than 150 NAIOP members at the Living Classrooms Douglass-Myers Campus, located at 1417 Thames St.

Every year, NAIOP-Maryland bands together and calls upon the organization’s experience in the real estate and construction industries to benefit the needs of a local organization or public venue. Starting around noon, NAIOP-Maryland members will descend en masse upon the site, armed with hammers, power drills, and a day’s worth of ambition to construct park benches, picnic tables and trash and recycling receptacles. Living Classrooms Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides educational and job skills training to local students, especially those that are at-risk.

A number of corporate sponsorships have been arranged, and NAIOP-Maryland is seeking additional partnerships. For instance, Wilhelm Commercial Builders has agreed to provide pre-cut lumber to construct the benches and picnic tables, as well as construction workers to assist those that are “less-skilled.”

“Every day, Living Classrooms makes a meaningful difference in the lives of children within Baltimore City and, for this one day, NAIOP-Maryland would like to make a difference by improving the physical characteristics of their waterfront campus,” explained Brendan Gill of MacKenzie Commercial Real Estate Services. “We are extremely impressed with their programming and the dramatic results that are achieved, which is to the benefit of the entire community. Our goal is to add some much-needed benches, tables and complementary accessories to assist their work,” Brendan added.

NAIOP-Maryland is soliciting additional help and individual donations to support this Community Service activity. The overall goal, in addition to contributing tangible items, is to raise a substantial amount of money for this and other needy charitable groups.
