Awards of Excellence 2008

NAIOP-Maryland holds its Awards of Excellence competition, honoring members and individuals for outstanding accomplishments or contributions to the local commercial real estate industry, every other year. Here is a listing of the 2008 winners.

Seventeen local companies were honored in twenty-four different categories at the recent Awards of Excellence 2008 dinner, sponsored by NAIOP-Maryland. In addition, Dwight S. Taylor of Corporate Office Properties Trust was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, Abby Glassberg of CB Richard Ellis, Inc. was selected as the Broker of the Year, F. Patrick Hughes of Hughes and Associates received the Legislative Award and Wayne Wilhelm of Wilhelm Commercial Builders was chosen as the Service Provider of the Year.

Roster of building winners

Build-to-suit building less than 50,000 square feet -- Corporate Office Properties Trust for US Geological Survey Center; Build-to-suit building 50,000 square feet and over - Manekin LLC for Manekin headquarters; Office: single story - H& H Rock Companies for Dorsey Business Center; Office: mid-rise/low-rise (tie for first place) -- Corporate Office Properties Trust for 6711 Columbia Gateway Drive and Manekin LLC for Water's Edge Building III.

In the interior and exterior categories

Best interior renovation -- RTKL Associates Inc. for Whiteford, Taylor & Preston, LLP; Best interior: mid-rise -- Kalmia Construction Company and W.H. Stablein, AIA & Associates for The Cleaning Authority; Best interior: single-story -- Continental Realty Corporation for CBS Radio; Best exterior: public common area - Corporate Office Properties Trust for Volition sculpture and plaza at The National Business Park.

Among business parks, the winners were:

Best office park -- Greenebaum & Associates, Inc. for Maple Lawn and Best flex park - St. John Properties, Inc. for Baltimore Crossroads @95.

The industrial and warehouse category had the following winners:

Speculative warehouse over 300,000 square feet - Trammell Crow Company for Dorsey Run Industrial Center; Speculative warehouse: 300,000 square feet or less - Preston Capital Management, Inc. for 6070 Dorsey Road; Rehab industrial -- Chesapeake Real Estate Group, LLC for Fairfield Business Park and Best industrial park -- Chesapeake Real Estate Group, LLC for Area 8 - Baltimore Crossroads @95.

Other category winners were:

Retail rehab -- Merritt Properties, LLC for Pulaski Retail, located at 8665 & 8675 Pulaski Highway; New retail -- Manekin LLC for McGaw Plaza; Mixed-use -- Brasher Design for Creekside Plaza; Environmentally-friendly green building -- Merritt Properties, LLC for Meadowridge 95, Building II; Marketing Materials -- St. John Properties, Inc. for Monthly Newsletter and Tenant Digest Magazine; Most creative office/warehouse transaction -- CB Richard Ellis for BGE Home Headquarters at Baltimore Crossroads @ 95; Most creative industrial transaction -- CB Richard Ellis for Ferguson Enterprises; Most creative financial transaction -- CB Richard Ellis for sale of Centerpoint at 8 North Howard Street; Community Impact -- Rhodes Development, LLC for 2213 McElderry Street, LLC and Humanitarian Award -- RTKL Associates Inc. for The League for People with Disabilities.

“This bi-annual awards competition celebrates and recognizes the innovative achievements of regional commercial real estate developers, as well as companies that service our industry,” stated Cole Schnorf, President of NAIOP-Maryland Chapter. “Each winner represents a compelling example of how a unique challenge was overcome to realize a result that was economically, environmentally and aesthetically feasible.

Dwight Taylor is President of Corporate Development Services, LLC, the development subsidiary of Corporate Office Properties Trust and has spent the past thirty years in the local commercial real estate industry. He is a former President of the NAIOP-Maryland Chapter and currently serves on the NAIOP national board of directors. Mr. Taylor previously worked for Constellation Real Estate Group, The Rouse Co. and the Baltimore Economic Development Corporation.

“Our Lifetime Achievement Award recipient symbolizes the lifelong dedication, professionalism, leadership and accomplishment that we all strive for. Dwight has the respect and admiration of our entire organization and he has led by example and achievement throughout his entire real estate career.”

F. Patrick Hughes was honored with the inaugural Legislative Award and in subsequent years this award will be named in his honor. “For many years, Pat spearheaded our organization’s legislative efforts and was tireless in the efforts he so graciously gave to the NAIOP membership. It is fitting that future recipients receive the F. Patrick Hughes Legislative Award,” Schnorf added.
