The effort, conceived as a “mini-development project” with landscape architects, construction managers and real estate professionals leveraging their talents, benefitted the Youth and Sports Education Center which is part of the Living Classrooms Foundation. The mission of Living Classrooms is to make a significant difference in the lives of disadvantaged youth in Baltimore City. Brendan Gill, The MacKenzie Companies and Connie Rhodes co-chaired the Community Service Program along with a committee of 15. Unrest in downtown Baltimore City postponed the on-site project, but a core group of volunteers and companies completed all activities including the installation of garden beds, planter boxes and other landscape and garden materials to meet the deadline of a summer camp.
Wilhelm Commercial Builders fabricated fourteen wooden benches, six picnic tables and twenty-four garden tables and moved them into place. BRICKMAN donated several hours delivering dirt and mulch and arranging it in the planters. Several weeks later, another round of supplies arrived at Patterson Park from NAIOP Maryland containing a delivery of shovels, rakes, tool sets, garden hoses and food snack items.
