The Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) has extended the deadline for the owners of covered buildings to submit energy benchmarking data under the state’s Building Energy Performance Standard (BEPS).
MDE will now consider benchmarking reports timely if submitted by September 30, 2025. If additional time is needed beyond September 30th, notice can be sent to beps.mde@maryland.gov with the subject line “BEPS Benchmarking Report Notification of Delay.” That notice should include the building ID number assigned to the covered building, a description of the cause for delay with supporting documentation, and the anticipated reporting date.
Questions on the reporting deadlines can be directed to MDE’s Building Decarbonization Team – beps.mde@maryland.gov. General information is available at mde.maryland.gov/beps.
According to an additional advisory issued August 14th, MDE will consider buildings that have submitted legitimate exemption requests to be in compliance with the 2025 reporting deadline while the exemption is under review. If the building is determined not to be exempt, building owners will be required to provide any prior year benchmarking reports by the June 1, 2026 reporting deadline.
MDE will treat buildings compliant with the Montgomery County BEPS program as compliant with the state regulations for 2025.
