The Climate Solutions Now Act (Senate Bill 528) is about to impact the commercial real estate sector in several, major ways.

Commercial buildings of 35,000 square feet or larger will have to begin reporting their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2025, lower those emissions 20 percent on average by 2030, then work towards achieving net zero. Over the next two years, state agencies and legislators will work out other direct impacts on CRE owners – including, new incentives for renovations that reduce a building’s GHG emissions and details of an all-electric building code.  Other SB528 initiatives could impact solar installations and electric vehicle infrastructure at commercial sites.

To successfully prepare for those changes, NAIOP Maryland members need to quickly develop a deep understanding of SB528.

In the first of NAIOP Maryland’s Climate Change and Solutions Webinar Series, we will break down SB528 and how it affects NAIOP members. We will discuss how to calculate GHG emissions as well as state initiatives to support renewable energy projects and the core competencies needed to successfully complete such projects.

About the Webinars: This series is being created to introduce the subject of measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions in commercial real estate. Commercial real estate can and should treat this state law as the greatest opportunity and responsibility of our time. Through these webinars, we will have important discussions that can help Maryland building owners with their business. We’ll continue to focus on some of the biggest trends and challenges our industry is facing.
