BALTIMORE, MD (July 6, 2011) – NAIOP Maryland, the local chapter of the national trade association comprising commercial real estate professionals, has announced the appointment of Geoffrey W. Washington as chairman of its sustainability committee. The sustainability committee serves to foster increased education and awareness concerning the importance of sustainable – or “green” – development practices in the commercial real estate sector, as well as to offer legislative advocacy efforts aimed at achieving positive outcomes in Maryland.

“I look forward to working with the other committee members and interested stakeholders in devising informative and beneficial programming regarding sustainability issues, as this area is of increasing and evolving importance to property owners and their tenants,” said Washington, who was appointed chairman of the Board of Municipal and Zoning Appeals of Baltimore City earlier this year.

Washington serves as an associate with the Baltimore-based law firm of Adelberg, Rudow, Dorf & Hendler, LLC. A civil litigator with more than 13 years of experience, he concentrates his practice in the resolution of a variety of claims, including complex commercial, construction, and business and corporate disputes.

A member of the Maryland State Bar Association, Monumental City Bar and Bar Association of Baltimore City, Washington earned a Juris Doctor with Honor from the University of Maryland School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in international politics from Georgetown University.

“The sustainability committee is taking on a greater role as the green building movement is emerging as the wave of the future,” said Robert A. Bavar, president of NAIOP Maryland. “We are pleased to have such an experienced and knowledgeable professional as Geoffrey Washington to chair this important committee.”

NAIOP Maryland has more than 330 members and is comprised of individuals working for real estate development companies, brokerage firms and affiliated companies such as financial institutions, architectural firms and engineers.

NAIOP is the nation’s leading trade association for developers, owners, investors and other professionals in industrial, office and mixed-use commercial real estate. Comprising more than 16,000 members in 55 chapters, it provides networking opportunities, educational programs, research on trends and innovations and strong legislative representation.
