Professional becomes 10th NAIOP-MD member to be recognized in past eleven years

Spencer Perry

Spencer Perry, Business Services Officer – Commercial Real Estate for BB&T, has been awarded a 2019 Developing Leaders Award by NAIOP, the commercial real estate development association. The national award is reserved for commercial real estate professionals under the age of 35 years who have distinguished themselves and show promise as a “future industry leader.” Perry was one of five recipients of this year’s award chosen from around the country. There are currently more than 5,000 Developing Leaders among the 51 NAIOP chapters in North America.

Perry becomes the 10th NAIOP-MD Developing Leader member to achieve this distinction over the past 11 years. Past winners are Kate Nolan Bryden of MRP Industrial (2018); Ryan Burrows of JLL and Kate Jordan of Lee & Associates (2016); Jonathan Manekin of Greenspring Realty Partners (2015); Nicole Wilhelm-Smith of ECS Mid-Atlantic (2014); Christopher Murray of Chesapeake Real Estate Group (2013); Taylor Fields of Knott Realty Group (2012); Brendan Gill of The MacKenzie Companies (2011); and Alex Kopicki of Solstice Partners and Kinglet (2009).

“NAIOP Maryland has opened numerous doors that may have been previously closed and not a day goes by in which I do not leverage my role as Chair of the local Developing Leaders program,” explained Spencer Perry, who also serves on the Board of Directors of the local association. “My Chair and committee positions regularly provide credibility, visibility and new contacts and, because I am considered the face of the program, am given the opportunity to make presentations at various events. At my relative young age, it would have been impossible to have entered the inner circle of the Maryland commercial real estate industry and share the table with its largest and most active developers, without this association.”

In his capacity with BB&T, Perry serves as the primary contact for a portfolio of commercial real estate developers across all asset classes to provide acquisition, development and construction financing. He also serves as a liaison to the bank’s other product line experts such as deposit, insurance and permanent loan specialists.

“Spencer brings unbridled energy and enthusiasm to every meeting, event and project he is entrusted with,” stated Vince Bagli, NAIOP-MD President. “Our Developing Leaders program has been extremely successful and represents a critical membership feeder system where professionals are initially exposed to our chapter. He does not stand on his laurels and is constantly challenging his committee to look for creative new ways to be innovative and different. As a result, membership has increased nearly 80 percent under his direction. We also take enormous pride in having 10 of our professionals chosen for this award which speaks to the effectiveness of our mentoring programs.”
