The State of Maryland has announced a partnership with the AI company Anthropic and implementation partner Percepta to integrate Anthropic’s Claude AI models into the operations of state agencies.

Anthropic will provide Claude AI to workers across state agencies, providing technical support to accelerate the deployment of AI-powered initiatives. A Claude-powered virtual assistant will help residents apply for benefits, track applications, and identify additional programs they may qualify for.

Percepta engineers will collaborate with the Maryland Department of the Environment and other agencies to use AI workflows to improve permitting and licensing timelines.

The agreement with Anthropic and Percepta will make Maryland one of the first states in the country to take a comprehensive, multi-agency approach to AI, according to the press release announcing the partnership.  Key components of the partnership build on a prior pilot program with the stated goals of improving public services, tackling child poverty, and expanding housing access.

The Rockefeller Foundation is supporting the partnership as part of its national initiative to help state and local governments responsibly deploy artificial intelligence. By investing in Maryland, the Foundation aims to strengthen the state’s operational capacity and demonstrate how AI can make government more effective, equitable, and responsive.
